The first and most important part of establishing a functioning and efficient 9-1-1 emergency response is street naming and official addresses. To this end, a street naming committee has been set up to name all the streets in Providenciales and will be extending this to Grand Turk and other islands in the chain in due course.
The Street Naming Committee plays a very important central information role in collecting historical assigned street names and in confirming names, establishing them in legal record, and inputting them into the 9-1-1 system. By having a central “brain” for street naming, the Committee can ensure that no two streets have similar names or similar sounding names that could easily be confused by a Telecommunicator and therefore cause delays in the response. The worst case scenario would be that emergency services go to the wrong address, potentially miles away from the actual scene of emergency.
People are often in a state of distress when they call 9-1-1 and therefore will be unlikely to have the time to spell names out for the benefit of the Telecommunicator. Having distinct and unique names for each street will save lives by ensuring that emergency services are always sent to the right location.
As of April 1st, 2009, most streets in Providenciales have been named. On this website you will soon find maps of the areas that already have street names assigned to them. Private developments are welcome to submit street names to the Committee in order that they may be assigned and registered on the system. If you are a developer of a private estate, please send your suggested street names tomailto:admin@911tci.com
During this process, it may occur that a street which has been assigned a name by local residents but has never been properly recorded by planning or land registry may need to be changed. This is because the same or similar name will already be registered and having two streets with the same or similar name could cause unnecessary and life-threatening delays by emergency services. We realise this may be distressing to those that have sentimental connections with their street name, but we hope that the benefit that 9-1-1 emergency response will bring will outweigh this loss. 9-1-1 would like to thank in advance those residents who may have to make this compromise for the benefit of the safety of the island.
Contact the 9-1-1 Administrator to find out more about street naming and fill out 9-1-1 Data Form to receive your official street address.
If you do not yet know your address, please fill out the 9-1-1 Data Form and you will receive your full, official address as registered in the 9-1-1 system. It is important that you know your official address as many named streets are not in the official registry under the same name and could cause confusion.
NUMBER YOUR HOUSE
As well as having distinct and clear street names, the ability of emergency service to reach you as quickly as possible will also depend on how easy it is to find your house on the street. Your house number should be as clear and visible as possible. It should be lit or reflective so it is easily visible at night. Place it near the road and on the front door of your home.
